RELIGIOUS SCHOOL 5770: 2009-2010

What’s great about Or Chadash’s Religious School?
Take a moment and think about why you want to send your child to religious school. What do you want him/her to learn? These are the questions we ask as we continue to design our curriculum. Here are our answers:

J O Y !
When your child returns home from Or Chadash’s Religious School, we want him/her to bring home joy and excitement. Whether learning a song for a Jewish holiday, working on an art project, speaking a Hebrew word or prayer for the first time or eating traditional Jewish foods, we want your child to have a Jewish experience that is filled with joy. When this happens, the joy of that learning fills your home.

Multiple approaches to learning
Some kids learn best visually, others by listening, others by doing. This means that while some children love a story, others like to draw, while still others want to get their whole body into a project. Furthermore, older students need different kinds of input than younger students. Providing various venues for learning is referred to as Multiple Intelligence Learning, and is applicable to children of all ages. We strive to mix media and curricular approaches to help your child find a way to connect and find meaning.

Our curriculum: Core basics
We focus on seven areas in our curriculum. They are: Hebrew acquisition, tefillah (prayer), Jewish holidays, Bible stories, Israel, tikkun olam (repairing the world) and ethics/values. At an age-appropriate level, your child will be exposed to all of these areas. Whether learning Hebrew letters and words, the prayers and blessings of the Shabbat liturgy, lessons from Torah heroes like Sarah and Moses, or how children in Israel observe Sukkot; all of these are taught in a values-centered way by teachers with expertise, wisdom, compassion and a modeling of Jewish values. We exemplify these values in the way we behave in class, learning that mitzvot teach us to treat each other kindly and with respect.

Getting the family together: Everyone’s a learner
Your child may make you smile when s/he brings home a song or story that you know and love or something that is new for you. What makes a rich, Jewish home and a valuable religious school experience are one and the same thing: the opportunity to reinforce the learning done at school with your Jewish life at home. To enhance this, we have family days in our schedule during which you and your child come to class together and participate in creating something that you can use at home. Now that’s family time and Jewish time!

What about Shabbat services?
Each year your child will learn parts of the Shabbat prayer service. Families are always welcome to attend our Shabbat services, and to help facilitate your child’s understanding we hold Shabbat services each year specifically for our religious school children and their parents.

Participation
As in any good educational setting, the greater the involvement of the parents, the greater the value received from the education. There are opportunities for you as parents to contribute to the warm community and rich educational experiences that we create here at Or Chadash. Perhaps you have a talent or skill that you can share with the children, or perhaps you are a great organizer. We need and ask for your talents. In working together we deepen the meaning and joy that is available to us through the Or Chadash Religious School.

Great value

It is important for us at Or Chadash to make religious school work for you financially as well as spiritually and educationally. In order to do this, we offer a discount for new enrollments.

All of these reasons make Or Chadash Religious School a great place for your children and
Congregation Or Chadash a great choice for your family. We look forward to seeing you in our program! For registration information, please contact Rabbi Damsky at the synagogue office, 480-342-8858, on her cell at 480-518-5556, or by email at rabbidamsky@gmail.com.
