Title:                Or Chadash Celebrates Goodell Donation to Pre-school

At Friday Shabbat services on January 12th, Congregation Or Chadash of the Northeast Valley, acknowledged the generous contribution of David and Naomi Goodell, their friends and family, by naming its Pre-school after David’s mother, Roz Goodell. Surrounded by her family, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Roz, who is 99 years young, thanked the congregation and her loved ones for the honor; educating our children in Jewish tradition and values “is the right thing to do”, she said.

Speakers, including David Goodell, Frank Lange, and Rabbi Robin Damsky, described Roz’s journey as a pioneering college graduate, a popular teacher, and honored volunteer with an emphasis on helping children. “Roz is an excellent role model to represent our Pre-school, with her dedicated service and selfless devotion to educating children”, said Rabbi Damsky, spiritual leader of Congregation Or Chadash. Naming the Pre-school after Roz “is the right thing to do”. The Congregation Or Chadash Roz Goodell Pre-school is targeted to open in August 2008. For more information, please call Frank Lange at 602-482-0142.

As part of its Social Action community programming, Congregation Or Chadash is co-sponsoring a Blood Drive on Sunday, March 18, from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM, with United Blood Services. The United Blood Services Mobile unit will be in the Or Chadash parking lot and registration and refreshments will be held in the Or Chadash sanctuary. The entire process, which takes less than an hour, is open to the community at large

“Do a mitzvah…give blood is our theme” says co-chair Skeeter Marcus. There is always a blood shortage, with severe weather, accidents, and natural disasters. “Blood donors make a difference; it’s truly the gift of life”, agrees Linda Moskowitz, co-chair of the Or Chadash Blood Drive.

Acceptable donors are healthy men and women who weigh at least 110 lbs, are at least 17 years old,  and have had no tattoos or piercings in the past year. The process includes registration, a mini-physical (temperature, pulse, blood pressure and blood iron level are checked), medical history, and refreshments. The actual donation time is several minutes. You may resume your normal routine after a brief rest and refreshments. Blood donors may only give blood once every 8 weeks, so if you are a regular donor, please save the date for Or Chadash.

For information and scheduling, please contact the Synagogue office at 480-342-8858 or the email below.

Title:           Or Chadash and Congregant Win Prestigious Awards

At the Biennial Kallah of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, held on October 29, Cheryl Hammerman, a founding member of Congregation Or Chadash, received the 2006 Hal Lipchick Memorial Leadership Award for her outstanding service and leadership as Midbar Vice President of the organization for the last ten years. The award, previously known as the President’s Award, was presented to her by Alan Weissman, president of the Pacific Southwest Region of United Synagogue, along with Hal Lipchick’s family, at Temple Sinai in Los Angeles.

At the same ceremonies, Congregation Or Chadash, the newest Conservative Synagogue in the Northeast Valley, received the 2006 Fritz Mintz Programming Award for the Building Our Future Together fundraiser. Alan Weissman presented the award to Linda Moskowitz, Or Chadash Board Member, who was accompanied by Rabbi Robin Damsky and congregants Les Moskowitz and Stan and Cheryl Hammerman. This innovative program, created entirely by congregants, included literature, presentations, and numerous activities, and raised money for a Torah, artwork and improvements to the synagogue itself.
